My original intention was to do a detailed report on all the service providers listing what they had to offer. Once I started looking into this I discovered an excellent website that had all the information already compiled. Just click on the link below and take a look. On the left hand side of each page you will see the site menu - To start with check out the page called “beginners guide”, there is plenty of information there. There is also a very good list of service providers and a useful “compare” page where you can see comparisons in speed, reliability, service etc for up to 6 service providers at a time. The important thing to remember is make sure you compare like for like. Firstly, make sure you check out the speed of the connection on offer. For example, there are packages starting at less than £15 but the speed is only 3 times as fast as dial up. (The typical broadband speed is 512 Kbps). Another value you will see mentioned in the data is Contention Ratio. This term tells you how many people would be sharing a connection at the busiest time. This is typically 50:1for most providers - some companies offer lower contention ratios of around 20:1 but you have to pay a great deal for such a luxury.

I have extracted some data below for you to see an example comparison. As I say, this is only an example. I am not saying who you should go for. All I am trying to do is give you the data so you can make up your own minds to suit your circumstances. This list only shows 8 out of the very many service providers, so it’s not by any means exhaustive.
